What is CBT?
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a type of mental health treatment that gives clients coping skills to help them manage their emotions more effectively. It gives you tools and strategies to help change your thinking, your behavior, and ultimately your emotions, so as to improve your life.
Research has shown it is an effective therapy to treat a range of psychological concerns, including anxiety, depression, eating disorders, addiction issues, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and trauma, to name a few.
CBT works under the premise that problems develop in one's life due to inaccurate or irrational thoughts and unhelpful patterns of behavior. Together with your therapist, you will identify these patterns of unhelpful thoughts and ways of acting, and work to create new, healthier thoughts and behaviors. With consistent effort and repeated practice, new patterns emerge and difficulties, such as anxiety and depression, decrease.
CBT isn't about forcing yourself to think positively. It's about looking honestly at the thoughts and habits that shape how you feel, and building new ones that serve you better.
