What is CBT?

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a type of mental health treatment that gives clients coping skills to help them manage their emotions more effectively. CBT gives the client tools and strategies to help them change their thinking, behavior, and ultimately emotions so as to improve their life. Research has shown it is an effective therapy to treat a range of psychological concerns, including anxiety, depression, eating disorders, addiction issues, obsessive compulsive disorder, and trauma to name a few.

CBT works under the premise that problems develop in one’s life due to inaccurate or irrational thoughts and unhelpful patterns of behavior. Together with your therapist, you will identify these patterns of unhelpful thoughts and ways of acting and work to create new, more healthy thoughts and behaviors. With consistent effort and repeated practice, new patterns emerge and difficulties, such as anxiety and depression, decrease.

What is DBT?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a type of mental health treatment dedicated to helping individuals who often feel out of control by their emotions, feel more in control. Rather than experiencing life and one’s emotions in a polarizing black and white way, DBT teaches individuals to live life with a dialectical balance of acceptance and change. This treatment empowers individuals with coping skills including Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation, Interpersonal Effectiveness, and Dialectics.

Comprehensive DBT is comprised of four components: 1) weekly individual therapy, 2) weekly DBT skills group therapy, 3) phone coaching as needed, and 4) weekly consultation team for the therapist. At Mindful Behavioral Health, we are not currently offering DBT skills groups, but we regularly collaborate with other practices that offer skills group so that our clients can receive comprehensive DBT.
