How Do I Find a Therapist That’s Right for Me?
If you can, we encourage you to interview two therapists to find the right fit for you.
Before you start, think about what you're looking for in your therapy. Are you looking for someone to simply listen, validate, and be a sounding board? Are you looking for a combination of supportive therapy and action-oriented or solution-focused therapy? Do you have specific goals you'd like to accomplish in therapy?
Our therapy tends to be a combination of both: supportive, validating therapy to help you process your feelings and experiences, combined with an action-oriented therapy where you learn practical techniques to help you reach your therapy goals.
What a good fit feels like
A lot of what matters to people as they choose a therapist is how comfortable they feel in the presence of their therapist. A good fit or comfortable connection is often based on the client feeling listened to, validated, and accepted without judgment.
Another key indicator you've found the right fit is when a client feels as though their therapist is working hard to help them reach their goals, is fully present with them, and is knowledgeable and well-trained in the area of your concern, such as anxiety. Make sure you check out your therapist's bio on their website or their profile on psychologytoday.com for that information. Also feel free to ask your therapist about their training and level of expertise.
Remember, you have a choice
You are the client and consumer here in your own therapy. You don't need to accept working with the first therapist you visit, especially if you don't feel a good connection, you feel they act more like how a friend would act (simply listening and praising you), or you're not sure they can help you.
Not every therapist is a good fit for every individual. Think about what you are looking for and seek it out. There is a good therapist out there for you. It just may take some interviewing first.
